Cabometyx overview

  • Brand name: Cabometyx

  • Active ingredient: cabozantinib (as S‑malate)

  • Dosage forms: film‑coated tablets, commonly 20 mg, 40 mg and 60 mg

  • Prescription: prescription‑only medicine, started and monitored by an oncologist or specialist

  • Therapeutic class: targeted multikinase inhibitor (anticancer medicine)

Cabometyx works by blocking specific enzymes (tyrosine kinases) involved in tumour growth, blood vessel formation and cancer spread. This helps slow the progression of advanced cancers and may help control symptoms and improve disease outcomes.

What Cabometyx is used for

Your doctor may prescribe Cabometyx for:

  • Advanced kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma)

    • Used alone in adults with advanced kidney cancer

    • Used together with another cancer medicine (such as nivolumab) as a first‑line treatment in some patients

  • Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma)

    • Used in adults with liver cancer that has progressed after previous systemic treatment

  • Certain thyroid cancers

    • Used in adults and some adolescents with advanced differentiated thyroid cancer that has spread or progressed and is no longer responding to radioactive iodine treatment

Always follow your cancer specialist’s advice and local prescribing information, as approved uses can vary by country.

How to take Cabometyx

  • Take Cabometyx exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Usual dosing is once a day, at about the same time each day.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or split the tablet.

  • Take Cabometyx on an empty stomach:

    • At least 1 hour before food, or

    • At least 2 hours after food.

If you miss a dose and the next dose is due in less than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.

Your doctor may change your dose or temporarily stop treatment if you experience side effects. Never adjust the dose yourself without medical advice.
